The Story

Gab and I were doing grocery shopping. He pointed at a chocolate milk box and said we should buy one… I always try to avoid buying unhealthy drinks, snacks and instant meals at the grocery, but Gab…not so much. In fact, I prefer to keep those calories for sweets (I love desserts ^.^) and restaurant outings =P. My eyes stared at him with judgement. I told him I could make him a much healthier hot chocolate at home, one that would be as satisfying. And that’s what I did! 🙂

Simple Ingredients and No Sugar Added

This Healthy Hot Chocolate recipe uses pure cacao powder, PB&Me Organic Powdered Peanut Butter (No Sugar Added) and soy milk. There is absolutely NO SWEETENER used in this hot chocolate. While a cup (250 mL) of chocolate milk contains somewhere around 25g of sugar, a cup of this Healthy Hot Chocolate contains three times less sugar (7 g). The hot chocolate is naturally sweetened by the soy milk (6g/250mL).

Almond butter powder

The Hot Chocolate Preparation

To make sure that the powders mix entirely with the milk, I first blend all my ingredients in a blender. Then, I pour the cold drink in a cup and heat it in the microwave. In fact, I’ve tried warming up the milk first, then stirring in the powders. However, the milk is never hot enough to dissolve all the powder properly. Also, I found that heating up the raw cacao powder confers it more taste. I usually heat the chocolate drink for about 2 minutes, until it starts boiling and foam starts to form at the top. If you don’t mind the extra sugar, you can add a bit of maple syrup. I personally find it good enough without maple syrup, but it’s your call!

Enjoy!
