The Story
It was a cold winter morning in Montreal. The temperature had dropped down to -19 C. My mood was leaning towards a persimmon smoothie. Yet, I needed something comforting, perhaps something spicy to tackle the cold. The comforting taste of turmeric, a spice used to make golden lattes, came to my mind. The weather outside also made me think of cinnamon, a classic winter spice. It turns out that cinnamon combines very well with turmeric.
The Health Benefits of Turmeric
Turmeric is super good for your health! Indeed, curcumin, the major active constituent of turmeric, provides many health benefits. Among others, it is known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties [1] [2]. It is not without reason that turmeric has been used for centuries in medical treatments of illnesses in India and China [2].
The Balance in the Persimmon and Turmeric Smoothie Bowl
To make the smoothie bowl have a creamier texture, I use a cup of soy milk. Adding 1/4 cup of light coconut milk also allows for a better balance with the pungent spices. I tried replacing the light coconut milk with extra soy milk to see what would be the difference. The result: the spices still felt too strong in the mouth. The light coconut milk therefore helped a lot in softening the spices. If you don’t have coconut milk at hand, using vanilla soy milk also does the trick. I do, however, have a strong preference for coconut milk. 😉
